The problem:

Quantum technology’s market is still emerging. There are already current solutions to defend against attacks with quantum computers. But their potential is not fully developed yet. Scientists are working to improve the performance to expand the range of applications and to induce quantum key distribution (QKD) to mass adoption.

The solution:

Group of scientists from Russian Quantum Center, The Quantum communication competence center of NTI NUST MISIS and cybersecurity firm QRate, which is focused on research and production of quantum communication systems, have made two discoveries, which will have a significant impact on the quantum communication market.

First achievement is the new information reconciliation algorithm based on polar codes, which is more resistant to environmental noises. Products for QKD are able to work stably not just in the laboratory, but also when the real environment affects the parameters. Scientific article was published by IEEE Communication Letters journal https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9184939/

Second achievement is reducing the portion of quantum-generated secret keys that is consumed for authentication procedure during classic post-processing (below 1%, which makes it the most efficient). It makes the QKD systems more efficient. Scientific article was published by IEEE Transactions on Information Theory https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9076167/.

These achievements together contributed to set the world record for efficiency of classical post-processing algorithms for QKD. Consequently, the rate of key generation will increase and the cost of equipment integration will decrease. QKD solutions are suitable for those industries that require a high level of information security in the long term.
