Software manufacturer and Governor Roy Cooper announced on Friday that Microsoft's $23 million investment in Charlotte is aimed at creating 430 new jobs by 2023.

The Redmond, Washington, company could receive $8.5 million in state subsidies over time if it meets its job creation and investment objectives. A group of government experts awarded an incentives deal to Microsoft minutes before Microsoft and Cooper executives unveiled the expansion at an event in Charlotte. The State Department of Commerce says North Carolina has outperformed competing offers from Irving, Texas and Fargo, North Dakota.

Microsoft already has 1,400 employees in North Carolina, including 1,150 in Charlotte. Average wages for new jobs could reach about $99,000.
